Lately, I’ve been engaging people and from our conversations it feels like as though Skills Development is HIGHLY OVERRATED!!! Sometimes it feels like as though, we waste our time on getting skilled… Oops! Stop right there!!! To be honest, Skill Acquisition is NEVER OVERRATED and will never be IN THE NEAREST FUTURE. There might be two reasons why you think so.

Firstly, you engage in some many things. with the rave and buzz about personal development, you jump into the skill bandwagon without asking where is this skill leading me to in my current pursuit. Depending on the career path you want to follow, you need to decide what it is you specifically need for the NOW!!! Yes, there are some general skills like communication skills, everyone is meant to have, but if you are pursuing a career in Web Development and you start learning how to slay the runway, now thats a misguided option. Ask yourself, or conduct a valuation test (you can reach out to someone in that field, higher than you for help) – understand the “baby steps” you need to take for you o grow, the vital skills you need at your level of knowledge. Once you get answers, get skilled!

No skill is a waste, I always say, however, not necessary for a particular season. Focus and Clarity is very important in personal development.

Secondly, you don’t give what you have. Now you have that skill, what have you used it to do? Nothing!!! So it just sticks with you and with time, it is forgotten. Whether it’s taking up a volunteer role, working for free or sharing the knowledge on information platforms, using that skill actually ensures that it sticks, it produces more results and you get to learn more. Ever heard, “YOU REMEMBER WHAT YOU LEARN WHEN YOU TEACH OTHERS” Oh well….

So do you think getting a skill is overrated? Do you think the hype is too much?
