Being an important day in the life of great renowned authors, including Cervantes, Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de laVega Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo,
etc it was a natural choice for UNESCO in Paris, 1995 during its General Conference to make this day World Book and Copyright Day – a day to pay world-wide tribute to #books & #authors & to also encourage young people in particular to discover the pleasure of #reading # gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those, who have furthered the social & cultural progress of humanity.
Marking the 24th edition UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry – publishers, booksellers and libraries, selected Sharaj, UAE for the World Book Capital for a one-year period, effective today because of the very innovative, comprehensive and inclusive nature of the application, with a community-focused activity programme containing creative proposals to engage the very large migrant population.
It is said that “millions are hidden in books”, of a truth great treasures & wisdom lie beneath mere pages of paper, experiences & history are covered there in. Books bring people together, celebrate cultural & historical heritages as well as reveal identities.
In our own way we can mark this years’
