A Movement.

Hello everyone.

Do you know that the average Nigerian family earns N16666 monthly and the average number of daughters in a Nigerian family is 2. The preceding statistic implies that each family would have to spend N540 on sanitary pads for their daughters. This is a luxury that most families in Nigeria cannot afford even as Inflation continues to rise without a corresponding increase in income.

Now why am I saying this? I want to introduce to you the Supporting Her Prime Campaign (SHP), a movement I believe in, which is targeted towards providing teenage girls and female adults with sanitary items necessary for them to live wholesome lives. We are a group of young people who have come together to provide a solution to the problem of unhealthy sanitary practices amongst young girls and inability to afford sanitary items.  We aim to solve this problem by providing sanitary pads to ladies who cannot afford them and giving them the right information on menstrual hygiene.

A UNESCO report estimates that 1 in 10 girls miss school in sub-saharan Africa during their menstrual cycles because they cannot afford sanitary pads. This could translate to missing at least 20percent of a given school year. Some girls drop out of school completely once they start menstruating due to a clear lack of sanitary products and facilities.

This is a problem the campaign seeks to address.

  1. To Create Awareness On The Welfare Of Children especially the Girl-Child
  2. To Educate Young GIRLS On Menstrual And Personal Hygiene, and overall Sexual Reproductive Health.
  3. To Create Awareness on Sex Education, Sexual Abuse and Sexual Rights.
  4. To Have A Strong Presence In Rural Areas
  5. To Provide Sanitary Pads For The Less-Privileged and Internally Displaced Persons.

Our first campaign kicked of in April 2017 with visits to 3 orphanage homes (2 in Port Harcourt, Rivers state and 1 in Ajah, Lagos state). So far, we have given out a total of 120 packs of sanitary pads and we aim to do more. We also visited in December, 2017 Ale community in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria to share some love 😀. We have also partnered with young organizations to make this a reality, and we are not stopping now!

The dream is to make life better for less privileged ladies and also reach girls in IDP camps who are in dire need of pads. Please don’t see this as just ordinary “sharing of pads”. We affect lives and show these young ladies they’re not alone.
