“Wherever you turn, you can find someone who needs you. Even if it is a little thing, do something for which there is no pay but the privilege of doing it. Remember, you don’t live in the world all of your own.”
Volunteerism is the act of providing selfless service for no financial or social gain to empower another person, group, community or organization. Volunteerism acts as a skill development as it builds the capacity of the volunteer in social work and community development. by meeting people, the volunteer’s people skill is sharpened as well as communication skills.
People engage in volunteerism activities to render their voices for better life – “… to help to eliminate poverty and to improve basic health and education, to provide safe water supply and adequate sanitation, to tackle environmental issues and climate change, to reduce the risk of disasters or to combat social exclusion and violent conflict. In all of these fields, volunteerism makes a specific contribution by generating well-being for people and their communities.
Volunteerism also forms the backbone of many national and international non-governmental organizations and other civil society organizations, as well as social and political movements. It is present in the public sector and is increasingly a feature of the private sector”. UN Volunteers
WHO CAN VOLUNTEER?
Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
~Martin Luther King, Jr.
You might say, “I don’t have enough time”, truth is all you need is a heart of commitment and love. When things are important to you, you’ll definitely find time for them, so why not a cause greater than yours. The world is in need of individuals who would stand up and render selfless service to humanity.
