Mar 03, 2018 | A Life Well Lived

“I have one message: that Jesus Christ came, he died on a cross, he rose again, and he asked us to repent of our sins and receive him by faith as Lord and Savior, and if we do, we have forgiveness of all of our sins.” —Billy Graham
A forerunner and an evangelist at revival meetings, and on radio and television for over 40 years, born on November 7, 1918, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Billy Graham helped bind together a vulnerable nation through religious revival. By glazing over the finer details of Christianity and focusing on more moderate doctrines, Graham made evangelism enticing, non-threatening, even easy—and the media made his messages accessible to the masses.

Graham’s integrity has encouraged millions to heed his spiritual guidance, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Bono, Muhammad Ali and United States presidents from Eisenhower to Bush. He has been rated by the Gallup organization as “One of the Ten Most Admired Men in the World” a staggering 51 times. He is regarded by contemporaries as humorous, non-judgmental, sincere, innocent and accepting.

A great preacher of the Word, The truth that he preaches is timeless! I am indeed grateful to God for such a time as this. Here are some of his quotes:

“The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith”.

“My one purpose in life is to help people find a personal relationship with God, which, I believe, comes through knowing Christ.”

“Only God Himself fully appreciates the influence of a Christian mother in the molding of character in her children.”

“A keen sense of humor helps us to overlook the unbecoming, understand the unconventional, tolerated the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected, and outlast the unbearable.”

“Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are stiffened.”

“Believers, look up – take courage. The angels are nearer than you think.”

“I just want to lobby for God.”

“If we had more hell in the pulpit, we would have less hell in the pew.”

“We are the Bibles the world is reading; we are the creeds the world is needing; we are the sermons the world is heeding.”

“The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out the lost and helpless”

“Suppose you could gain everything in the whole world, and lost your soul. Was it worth it?”

“There is nothing wrong with men possessing riches. The wrong comes when riches possess men.”

“If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his life.”

Love, Relationships & Romance

“God proved His love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.’”

“Nothing can bring a real sense of security into the home except true love.”

“Tears shed for self are tears of weakness, but tears shed for others are a sign of strength.”

“God is more interested in your future and your relationships than you are.”

“The word ‘romance,’ according to the dictionary, means excitement, adventure, and something extremely real. Romance should last a lifetime.”

“It is not the body’s posture, but the heart’s attitude that counts when we pray.”

“Prayer is simply a two-way conversation between you and God.”

“The only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course”

“The most eloquent prayer is the prayer through hands that heal and bless.”

His funeral was held under an enormous white tent and the simple pine casket was built by inmates at a Louisiana prison, and will be buried next to his wife near the Billy Graham Library on the family’s property in Charlotte. Mr Graham became the fourth private citizen in US history to lie in repose in the United States Capitol building, where President Trump paid tribute to him as “an ambassador for Christ who reminded the world of the power of prayer and the gift of God’s grace.”

His headstone, media reports say, will be inscribed with: “Preacher of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ” at his own request. It will also refer to John 14:6 of the Christian bible, which reads: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’ He said his father was not a double standard man and that he was a true believer in the Bible, saying: “He didn’t understand it all, but he sure believed it all.”

His daughter Anne Graham Lotz said her father’s death would be as significant as his decades of ministry, “I believe this is a shot across the bow from heaven,” she said, “And I believe God is saying, ‘Wake up church. Wake up world. Wake up Anne. Jesus is coming.’”
